Antoni Rosell

Dr. Antoni Rosell is an internationally recognized expert in interventional pulmonology with over 30 years of experience in clinical care, academic leadership, and research. He currently serves as Clinical Director of the Thoracic Area at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (Barcelona), overseeing the Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery departments. He is also a Professor of Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where he plays an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as in academic governance.

Dr. Rosell has led the development and implementation of advanced bronchoscopic techniques in Spain and Europe, including linear EBUS, navigational bronchoscopy, endoscopic lung volume reduction, and lately, the robotic bronchoscopy platform integrated with cone-beam CT. He is responsible for training hundreds of physicians through highly structured educational programs, including international workshops, national master’s programs, and simulation-based learning initiatives. His proven organizational and leadership capabilities are reflected in his roles as Director of numerous training courses and as President or Co-President of major international congresses, including the EABIP Congress (2015) and World Conference on Lung Cancer (IASLC)(2019).

As a translational researcher, Dr. Rosell bridges clinical practice and innovation, focusing on early diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of lung cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. He is principal investigator of 13 competitive research projects, including studies funded by Catalan, Spanish and European institutions. His research on radiomics, airway stenting, and confocal endomicroscopy has led to the co-authorship of over 105 peer-reviewed articles, 42 of which are published in high-impact (Q1) journals such as Thorax, European Respiratory Journal, Clinical Cancer Research, and The New England Journal of Medicine. He is also co-inventor of 4 patents and co-founder of two med-tech spin-offs: Adbroncus and Tractivus.

Dr. Rosell has established a wide-reaching international network, collaborating with centers of excellence like Vrije Universiteit Medical Center (Netherlands), MD Anderson Cancer Center (USA), Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (USA), and British Columbia Cancer Agency (Canada), and various European academic institutions. He is a senior contributor to the World Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (WABIP), having authored international clinical practice guidelines on airway stenting. He is currently a Board Member of the International Association for the

Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and serves as President of the Barcelona Respiratory Network Research Foundation (BRN).

In addition to his clinical and scientific leadership, Dr. Rosell has a strong commitment to academic mentorship. He has supervised several doctoral theses and master’s projects, contributed to curriculum development in respiratory medicine, and serves as a reviewer and advisor for national and international grant agencies. His contributions have earned him multiple awards, including the Professional Excellence Award from the Barcelona Medical Council (COMB) in 2022.
